Brest Lead Race to Sign Reading Star Amid Contract Uncertainty

Amadou Salif Mbengue, the Senegalese centre-back out of contract at Reading FC this June, is attracting strong interest from Ligue 1 side Brest, according to reports.

The 23-year-old has been a key figure at the heart of Reading’s defence this season, making over 33 appearances in League One and establishing himself as one of the club’s standout performers. His deal expires in the summer, and a renewal has yet to be agreed.

Sources at Africafoot suggest Brest are the most determined of three clubs vying for his signature, with Championship duo Blackburn Rovers and Watford also closely monitoring the situation.

Brest monitoring Mbengue as summer interest heats up

Mbengue joined Reading in 2022 after leaving French club FC Metz and has since racked up 105 appearances for the Royals. His consistent performances and physical presence at the back have made him a valued asset — one whose ambition to play at a higher level is becoming clear.

All three suitors are reportedly looking to reinforce their defensive options ahead of next season, and Mbengue appears to fit the bill. Discussions have already taken place, and it’s understood the player is open to a move that offers progression and stability.

The U23 Senegal international, valued at €700,000 by Transfermarkt, is seeking a long-term project to match his career ambitions. Brest, currently preparing for their 30th Ligue 1 fixture of the season against RC Lens, are seen as an ideal destination that aligns with his aspirations both in stature and opportunity.

Mbengue has yet to comment publicly on his future, though the growing interest suggests a decision could be made sooner rather than later. Reading, still in the League One play-off mix, face an uphill battle to convince him to stay without promotion.

Site opinion

Brest’s pursuit of Mbengue makes a lot of sense. The club is quietly building a solid foundation in Ligue 1 and needs defensive reinforcements who combine youth, experience, and room to grow. Mbengue’s experience in England — where the physical and mental demands are high — would make him a strong asset in France’s top flight.

For Reading, losing him on a free would be a major blow, especially with their defensive core already facing summer uncertainty. Unless the Royals can secure promotion and stabilise off the pitch, it’s hard to see how they could fend off interest from clubs of Brest’s stature.
