Bayern Munich Face Three Way Battle For England International

Bayern Munich are weighing a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi next summer, with a mid-season transfer considered off the table.

Per reports in Germany and England, the Bundesliga champions have added the 25-year-old England international to a growing list of elite admirers, alongside Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea. Spanish and Italian giants — including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter and Juventus — are also monitoring the situation.

Background: Liverpool deal collapsed late

Guehi was close to a deadline-day switch to Liverpool in the last window, with a fee of around £35m reported and a portion of medical tests understood to have begun. However, Palace ultimately pulled the plug, with one report claiming head coach Oliver Glasner threatened to walk if the move went through. The centre-back has since reiterated his commitment to the Eagles for this season.

While Liverpool were tipped to return in January with a reduced bid, the latest guidance is that Palace will not sanction a winter exit. That stance effectively pushes any tug-of-war into the summer, where Guehi would be available without a fee if he reaches the end of his deal. Foreign clubs could, in theory, explore a pre-contract later in the season.

Bayern’s angle

Bayern are assessing centre-back options amid uncertainty over Dayot Upamecano’s contract situation and with squad balance under review. Jonathan Tah, Kim Min-jae and Hiroki Ito have been cited as internal depth or external options, but Guehi’s age profile, athleticism and Premier League pedigree make him a compelling long-term play. For Vincent Kompany, a ball-secure, front-foot defender who can hold a high line and defend big spaces fits the blueprint.

Site Opinion

Palace’s hard line on January makes sense: survival value trumps mid-season money. That shifts leverage toward the player in the summer, when a free transfer (or end-of-deal scenario) would trigger a scramble. Bayern’s interest tracks with their need to future-proof the back line, but competition from Liverpool, City and Chelsea — plus the pull of Spain or Italy — means this will come down to project clarity and guaranteed minutes.

If Bayern move decisively and sell the pathway, Guehi feels like a Kompany-era cornerstone. Until then, the message is simple: no winter discount, see you in June.
