Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant believes Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong would be a “great replacement” should Trent Alexander-Arnold move to Real Madrid this summer.
Pennant praised Frimpong’s attacking mindset and defensive capability, suggesting the Dutchman would thrive at Anfield and offer competition to rising talent Conor Bradley.
“Jeremie Frimpong would be a great replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold,” Pennant said. “What Liverpool would lose in Trent, they’d gain in other areas with Frimpong. We know he’s no Trent with that ability to ping balls anywhere on the pitch, but he’s got a huge attacking threat.”
“He likes to get forward and is attacking-minded, but he can defend as well. It would be a great replacement and would give Conor Bradley something to think about. I’ve heard this rumour flying about for a while and I’ve liked it — I think Liverpool fans would welcome him with open arms.”
“He’s been fantastic for Bayer Leverkusen so if he were to come to Liverpool I think that’d be a top signing this summer.”
Xavi Simons Could Challenge Szoboszlai for Creative Role
Pennant also weighed in on the potential signing of RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, suggesting the Dutch international could provide competition for Dominik Szoboszlai in the number 10 role at Liverpool.
“Xavi Simons is a player with plenty of ability,” Pennant noted. “He’s comfortable on the ball in teams that play possession-based football, and on that basis I think he’d be a great fit for Liverpool. He’s got an eye for goal and he’s creative, so I think he’d give Dominik Szoboszlai a run for his money in that central role.”
“He’s got a big price tag but he’s shown he can do it on the biggest stage in the Champions League so players of his calibre would be a good fit for this Liverpool side.”

Jermaine Pennant’s backing of Jeremie Frimpong isn’t without merit. Frimpong has had an outstanding campaign under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, showcasing electric pace, attacking flair, and improved defensive awareness. While he might not possess the unique passing range of Alexander-Arnold, his dynamism and adaptability make him a compelling prospect — especially for a Liverpool side that may be preparing for a tactical evolution.
As for Xavi Simons, his technical prowess and versatility have made him one of Europe’s most exciting young talents. Bringing him to Merseyside would not only raise the team’s quality but also add valuable depth and competition. In a post-Klopp transition era, targeting players like Frimpong and Simons could form the backbone of Liverpool’s next chapter.
