Andros Townsend has completed his move to Antalyaspor, following weeks of uncertainty due to a FIFA-imposed transfer ban.
The 33-year-old winger, who previously played for Luton Town in the Premier League, found himself in limbo after signing with the Turkish Super Lig side but could not be officially registered. The transfer ban, placed due to unpaid debts to former players, left Townsend unable to play, despite training with the team.
In a candid interview with BBC Radio 5 Live last month, Townsend revealed the frustrating situation: “I don’t know who owns me. I don’t know where my contract is…I’m literally just stuck in Antalyaspor, just training.” Fortunately, the situation has now been resolved, and Antalyaspor’s registration ban has been lifted, allowing Townsend to be registered and finally make his debut for the club.
Antalyaspor announced Townsend’s signing on social media, celebrating the end of the saga with the caption: “Mission completed.” Townsend himself expressed relief, sharing his excitement on Instagram with the words: “A new chapter, can’t wait to get started.”

Townsend brings extensive Premier League experience to the Turkish side, having played 291 matches in England’s top flight and earned 13 caps for his country, scoring three goals. His move to Turkey is a fresh opportunity to reinvigorate his career following his departure from Luton Town earlier in the summer.
Antalyaspor are currently 11th in the Turkish Super Lig, with one win, one draw, and two losses from their first four matches. Their most recent outing was a 5-2 defeat to İstanbul Başakşehir. They will next face Adana Demirspor on September 16, hoping to climb up the table with a crucial home victory.
Who is Andros Townsend?
Townsend began his career at Tottenham Hotspur, where he came through the academy and made his senior debut. Although he found first-team opportunities limited at Spurs, he had several loan spells with various English clubs, including Leeds United, Queens Park Rangers, and Birmingham City.
Townsend made a significant impact after moving to Newcastle United, where he scored four goals in 13 appearances, although his time there ended with the club’s relegation from the Premier League. Following his stint at Newcastle, Townsend joined Crystal Palace, where he enjoyed a long and productive spell. Over the course of five seasons, he made over 150 appearances for Palace, scoring several key goals and becoming known for his work rate and ability to score from distance.
After leaving Palace, Townsend signed for Everton, but his time at Goodison Park was marred by injuries, including a serious ACL injury that sidelined him for much of his tenure. Despite these setbacks, he remained a player known for his determination and experience. He returned to the game for a short stint with Luton Town, before swapping Bedfordshire for Turkey.
Site Opinion: Transfer Relief
Townsend’s situation highlights the complexity of transfer bans and the impact they can have on players. His signing could bring much-needed experience and creativity to Antalyaspor’s squad as they look to improve their form in the Super Lig.
The arrival of a seasoned player like Townsend is a significant boost for Antalyaspor, whose mix of young talent and experienced players like Townsend will be vital for their hopes of moving up the league standings.
