Ajax Striker On His Bike After International Bust-Up

Tensions ran high during the Dutch national team’s Sunday training session as striker Wout Weghorst appeared visibly irritated following a sharp exchange with teammate Jurriën Timber.

The incident occurred during a reserve training match ahead of the Netherlands’ upcoming Nations League fixture against Germany on Tuesday in Amsterdam.

The clash took place when Weghorst, who scored as a substitute in the Netherlands’ 5-2 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday, was involved in a physical duel with Arsenal defender Timber. The challenge resulted in Timber making contact with Weghorst’s foot, with the latter going down quickly.

The incident sparked a brief but tense exchange of words between the two players, with the new Ajax man clearly annoyed at his teammate’s challenge. Defender Jan Paul van Hecke tried to calm the striker down, but seemingly to no avail.

National coach Ronald Koeman quickly intervened, urging Weghorst to calm down and refocus on the training session. Despite Koeman’s intervention, the incident left Weghorst visibly irritated. He was seen rushing to his bike shortly after the session ended, and cycling away.

With the Netherlands set to face Germany in a crucial Nations League match on Tuesday, the Oranje will be hoping for no lasting impact from the training ground tension as they prepare to build on their recent momentum.

This altercation with Timber, while likely not a significant issue, could become a distraction if not properly managed. Training ground incidents are common in football, especially with competitive players like Weghorst, but if the frustration lingers, it could affect team chemistry. Koeman’s quick intervention to diffuse the situation suggests he’s aware of the need to keep harmony in the squad. However, should tensions resurface, it could risk creating divisions within the squad, particularly if Weghorst feels undervalued or Timber’s challenge is seen as reckless by teammates.

In the long term, if Weghorst continues to perform, the argument is unlikely to have any lasting impact. But with the Netherlands preparing for a high-stakes clash against Germany, maintaining a unified and focused team will be critical. Both players will need to set aside any lingering frustrations and contribute positively to the Oranje’s efforts on the pitch.
