Ivan Perišić, the 35-year-old Croatian football icon, has officially joined Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven as a free agent, following his departure from Hajduk Split.
His arrival marks a significant boost for PSV, with Perišić bringing a wealth of experience from Europe’s top leagues and clubs. In an interview on PSV’s YouTube channel, Perišić expressed both surprise and excitement about joining the Eredivisie giants.
“I’m a little surprised that I ended up here,” Perišić admitted. “But I’ve been a free agent for the last few weeks and I’ve been waiting for the best option for me and my family. It was an easy decision when PSV called me. I got the call on Saturday, and I wanted the deal concluded as soon as possible because I want to play matches and train with the club. I want to enjoy football, and I still have a lot to offer. I’m very happy.”
Perišić’s hunger for success remains undimmed despite his veteran status. He made it clear that his decision to join PSV was driven by the club’s potential to challenge for major trophies. “I like to play for trophies, that’s my attitude. I always want more,” he said. “I’ve played in a lot of clubs and countries. I like change, and I like to win. I had several offers in Italy, Spain, and France, and there were also offers from Arab clubs, but I want to play for important trophies, and PSV is perfect for that.”
The Croatian star is known for his relentless work ethic and determination, and after recovering from a serious knee injury last year, he’s eager to make an impact at his new club. “I want to enjoy life and football, I train hard and I want to play as many matches as possible. I need a little more time to adapt to the new club, but I’m ready,” Perišić added.
In a nod to one of his footballing idols, Perišić will wear the number five shirt at PSV, explaining: “My favorite is the number four, but someone already has it… But the number is not important. I took the five because one of my idols is Zinedine Zidane, who wore that number at Real Madrid.”
Perišić’s journey to PSV follows a brief stint back at Hajduk Split, where he returned after a 17-year absence to rehabilitate from his injury and make 12 appearances. His storied career has seen him play for top clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, and Tottenham Hotspur. Now, at PSV, he’s eager to add more silverware to his already impressive collection.
Site Opinion – Smart Move
PSV’s decision to bring in Ivan Perišić is a shrewd and timely move. Perišić may be 35, but his vast experience at the highest levels of European football can provide the cutting edge PSV needs as they push for both domestic and European success. His winning mentality, coupled with his proven ability to perform in crucial moments, could make him a key figure in PSV’s ambitions this season.
There may be some questions over how quickly Perišić can adapt to a new environment at this stage in his career, but his statements reflect a player with the drive and determination to thrive. If he can stay fit, PSV may have secured one of the most intelligent signings of the summer.
