1. FC Magdeburg Star Attracting Championship Interest

Martijn Kaars could be on the move this summer after hinting that his time at 1. FC Magdeburg may be nearing an end.

The Dutch forward, who has impressed with 19 goals and six assists this season, is reportedly attracting interest from clubs in both the Bundesliga and England’s top two divisions.

Although Kaars is under contract until 2027, his form and age suggest that a transfer could be on the horizon. Speaking to BILD, the 26-year-old said:

“After a season like this at 26, it’s logical that I want to take the next step. Now would be the right moment. But I don’t know anything at the moment; I’m waiting for the summer.”

His outstanding physical output—leading the league in both sprinting and high-intensity runs—has added to his appeal. Clubs in Germany and across the Channel are monitoring the situation, with Kaars confirming he is open to all possibilities:

“German football suits me very well. The Bundesliga would therefore be a natural fit for me. But I’m open to all discussions.”

Decision Time Approaching

Kaars’ future comes into sharp focus following Magdeburg’s failed promotion bid. The 0–5 defeat to Preußen Münster, described by Kaars as “very emotional and difficult,” effectively ended their hopes of climbing to the 2. Bundesliga. Despite this, he remains committed to finishing the season strongly, stating:

“We’ve had a good season. I’m very happy in Magdeburg, the fans are amazing, and I love the people here.”

He added that he is determined to give his all in the final match against Fortuna Düsseldorf to repay the club’s loyal supporters. However, signs point towards a summer departure, with Kaars planning time off in the Netherlands and Italy before making a decision. A return for pre-season in June seems increasingly unlikely.

Kaars’ potential exit would mark a significant change for Magdeburg, who may struggle to replace his influence both on and off the pitch. But for the player, it could represent the ideal moment to step onto a bigger stage.

Site Opinion

Martijn Kaars has outgrown 1. FC Magdeburg. His numbers, physical stats, and all-round performances are those of a player ready for a higher level. While loyalty to Magdeburg is evident in his words, Kaars is a professional approaching his prime—and opportunities in the Bundesliga or Championship may not come often. A summer transfer appears not only likely but necessary for his continued development. For Magdeburg, the task will now be to maximise his value while planning for life without their talismanic number nine.
