Antonio Conte and Lautaro Martinez exchanged heated insults during SSC Napoli’s dramatic 3-1 win over Inter in Serie A on Saturday night.
The reigning champions reclaimed top spot with a one-point lead over AC Milan, but the post-match talk was dominated by a touchline bust-up between the two fiery figures.
Tempers flare as Napoli overpower Inter
The explosive scene unfolded midway through the second half when tensions between the two benches boiled over. Witnesses reported Martinez shouting “You’re sh****** yourself!” at his former manager, prompting Conte to reply with a crude gesture and the words: “Wrap your laughing gear around this.”

Before the chaos erupted, Napoli had taken control of the match thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay. De Bruyne converted from the spot in the 33rd minute — his fourth Serie A goal in eight appearances — before limping off through injury. McTominay, last season’s Serie A Player of the Year, doubled the lead before half-time to end a five-game league goal drought.
After the interval, Hakan Calhanoglu pulled one back for Inter from the penalty spot, briefly sparking hope of a comeback, only for Frank Anguissa to seal the win with a thumping finish in the 66th minute.
History repeats between Conte and Martinez
This latest confrontation was not the first time Conte and Martinez have clashed. During Conte’s spell as Inter boss in the 2020-21 campaign, the pair infamously argued on the touchline when the striker reacted angrily to being substituted. Conte stormed towards him and demanded silence, with the row spilling into headlines across Italy.
Days later, Inter teammates diffused the tension with humour, handing both men boxing gloves during training for a mock sparring session — a moment that quickly went viral.
Now, four years later, the fiery dynamic has resurfaced on opposite sides of the Serie A divide. While Napoli celebrated a vital win that keeps their title defence on track, the spotlight once again fell on Conte’s combustible nature and his old pupil’s refusal to back down.
