Northern Ireland Stopper Bids Farewell To Middlesbrough

Northern Irish keeper Alan Fettis has issued a message of thanks to Middlesbrough supporters and staff after bringing his three-year spell as the club’s goalkeeping coach to an end.

The former Manchester United coach departed Boro last week, with academy head of coaching Chris Pennock stepping in on an interim basis while a successor is identified.

Fettis Reflects On His Time At Boro

Fettis joined the club in 2022 and remained through multiple managerial changes, working with a host of goalkeepers during his time on Teesside. In a statement, he thanked colleagues and players alike for their support.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Middlesbrough Football Club for three wonderful years. It has been a privilege to work as goalkeeping coach alongside such dedicated staff, talented players, and passionate supporters…

“Middlesbrough will always hold a special place in my heart, and I wish the club every success in the future. Up The Boro! Keep the Faith.”

His departure comes only three months into Rob Edwards’ tenure as head coach. While the reasons behind Fettis’ exit remain unclear, Pennock has been asked to oversee the keepers for now, providing continuity as the club begin the recruitment process.

Focus Shifts To Stability

Boro have enjoyed a promising start to the Championship season under Edwards, and the coaching change is not expected to derail momentum. Pennock, who has built a strong reputation within the academy, already has working relationships with several senior stoppers, easing the transition while the board consider long-term options.

The decision marks another adjustment to the backroom structure at Rockliffe Park, but with a settled defensive unit and a clear game model under Edwards, the priority will be to ensure the next appointment complements existing methods rather than disrupts them.

Site Opinion

Fettis leaves with his reputation intact, having guided a variety of keepers during a period of managerial change at the Riverside. His farewell message reflects the respect he earned behind the scenes, but for Middlesbrough the task now is to find the right fit to support Edwards’ vision. Goalkeeper coaches are pivotal in modern football, shaping not only shot-stopping and distribution but also tactical cohesion with the defence.

Pennock provides a steady hand for now, but the club should take time to ensure the permanent appointment aligns with both academy philosophy and first-team demands. Done right, the change can be smooth and set Boro up for further progress this season.
