‘No Chance’ – Barcelona President Rules Out Legend’s Return

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has ruled out the prospect of Lionel Messi returning to play for the club, but confirmed plans for a future tribute once the Nou Camp reopens.

The 37-year-old is under contract with Inter Miami until 2028, and Laporta told Catalunya Radio that talk of a comeback would be unfair and unrealistic. He admitted that Messi’s departure in 2021, driven by financial restrictions, was not how anyone wanted his story to end, but said the club intends to give him a proper farewell when the stadium renovation is complete.

Laporta closes door on playing return

Laporta made it clear that speculation over a second spell should stop, given the Argentine’s long-term deal in the United States. He said the focus should now be on celebrating a remarkable career, not reigniting it. Messi’s impact on the Catalan club remains unmatched, with 672 goals in 778 games and a haul of 10 league titles and four Champions League crowns.

The president revealed that plans are already being discussed for a farewell match at a packed Nou Camp once the rebuild is finished. It would be a symbolic way to reconnect the modern side with its greatest player, while allowing fans to show their appreciation one last time. Laporta said it would be “right that he has the best tribute in the world.”

Tribute expected once Nou Camp reopens

Any farewell will depend on the completion of the stadium project and Messi’s schedule with Inter Miami, but Laporta’s comments confirmed the club’s intent to honour him publicly. The event is expected to coincide with the reopening of the ground, which will again host more than 100,000 supporters.

While a playing return is now off the table, Messi’s emotional connection to Barcelona remains strong. He made a surprise visit to the club last week and spoke of his wish to return in some capacity. Laporta’s comments suggest that, when the time is right, the club will make sure the farewell reflects the scale of his legacy.
