Milan and Lazio Target Monza’s 21-Year-Old in January Transfer Race

Milan’s hunt for midfield reinforcements in the upcoming January transfer window has led them to several promising candidates.

Among the names are Reda Belahyane (Hellas Verona), Morten Frendrup (Genoa), Lucas Gourna-Douath (Salzburg), and Johnny Cardoso (Betis). However, recent reports suggest that the Rossoneri are now prioritising Warren Bondo, the 21-year-old French midfielder currently with Monza.

Warren Bondo: A Rising Talent

Bondo, of Congolese descent, began his career at AS Nancy before joining Monza on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. After a loan spell at Reggina, he returned to Monza, where he has established himself as a key figure under Alessandro Nesta. This season, Bondo has made 12 Serie A appearances, showcasing his versatility and maturity in the midfield.

To date, Bondo has made 44 appearances for Monza, scoring once — in a 4-2 victory against Milan last February — and providing one assist. His tenacity in midfield is evident from his disciplinary record, with 12 yellow cards and one expulsion during his time at the club.

Lazio and Milan Enter the Fray

Lazio’s interest in Bondo stems from their need to bolster their midfield, with Gaetano Castrovilli’s recurring injuries and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s inconsistent performances leaving gaps in the squad. Milan, however, have joined the race, seeing Bondo as a long-term investment for their midfield, given his age and potential.

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport and Il Corriere dello Sport, both clubs are monitoring Bondo closely, and a bidding war could ensue during the January transfer window. His contract with Monza runs until June 2027, giving the club significant leverage in negotiations.

Monza’s Reluctance to Sell

Monza’s precarious position in Serie A, where they sit 19th with only nine points, complicates any potential transfer. The club is desperate to retain key players like Bondo to stave off relegation, and Alessandro Nesta has relied heavily on him this season.

While interest from top Serie A sides might be tempting, Monza’s management is likely to resist selling Bondo mid-season unless presented with a compelling offer. The midfielder’s role in the team is pivotal, and losing him could severely impact their survival hopes.
