Borussia Dortmund are stepping up their pursuit of Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham, with the Bundesliga club increasingly confident of securing a summer transfer for the 19-year-old.
Bellingham has enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Championship, making 34 appearances, scoring four goals and registering three assists. Despite his long-term contract at the Stadium of Light, reports suggest Dortmund are keen to bring him to Germany, echoing the path of his older brother, Jude Bellingham.
Family Ties Could Prove Key
According to BILD, Dortmund scouts have tracked Bellingham’s development for more than three years and have maintained close links with the family since Jude’s transfer to the Westfalenstadion in 2020.
Jobe Bellingham has reportedly visited Signal Iduna Park on several occasions and is said to be impressed by both the club’s atmosphere and its renowned youth development system. The strong existing relationship with the Bellingham family is believed to be playing a key role in shaping discussions behind the scenes.
Signed from Birmingham City in 2023, Bellingham is contracted to Sunderland until 2028. However, the Black Cats’ reported £25 million valuation could open the door to negotiations. Dortmund are expected to test that figure, potentially aiming for a reduced fee.
This season has seen the teenager develop physically and tactically, showcasing his versatility across several midfield roles. His performances have earned him a reputation as one of the most promising young players in the division.
Sunderland Record Sales
If completed, a deal in the region of £25 million would rank Bellingham among Sunderland’s most valuable ever sales.
The club’s record outgoing transfer remains Jordan Pickford’s move to Everton in 2017, initially worth £25 million and rising to £30 million with add-ons. Other notable departures include Darren Bent’s £18 million switch to Aston Villa in 2011 and Simon Mignolet’s £9 million move to Liverpool in 2013.
Site Opinion
Jobe Bellingham’s rapid rise has been one of the bright spots in Sunderland’s season. His technical ability, maturity and adaptability have made him a standout talent in the Championship. While supporters will naturally hope he stays to continue his development in red and white, the lure of Borussia Dortmund—known for nurturing elite young players—could prove irresistible.
Should the deal go ahead, Sunderland will at least benefit financially, potentially aiding the club’s long-term ambitions. Yet, there’s no denying it would be a significant loss on the pitch. Much like his brother, Jobe seems destined for the highest level—and Dortmund could be the ideal launchpad.
