From Serie A Star To Premier League Target: Former Manchester United Man Set For Shock Return

Scott McTominay could be set for a shock Premier League return as reports in Italy suggest the SSC Napoli star is struggling to adapt to life off the pitch.

The Scotland international, who left Manchester United in 2024, has enjoyed a remarkable debut campaign in Serie A, helping Antonio Conte’s side lift the Scudetto. But despite thriving on the field, the 28-year-old is reportedly finding the intensity of Neapolitan life “suffocating.”

Success on the pitch, strain off it

McTominay’s move from Old Trafford to Naples for £25.7 million was one of the standout transfers of 2024. After scoring 13 goals in 36 appearances last season, he played a key role in guiding Napoli to their first title defence in over three decades. His form saw him nominated for the Ballon d’Or, finishing 18th overall — sandwiched between Robert Lewandowski and Joao Neves.

This term, the midfielder has continued his fine run, scoring four goals in ten appearances, including one in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Inter Milan at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring from the penalty spot before McTominay doubled Napoli’s advantage. Hakan Calhanoglu pulled one back for Inter, but Frank Anguissa struck again to secure all three points and keep Napoli a point clear of AC Milan at the top of Serie A.

Life in Naples taking its toll

While McTominay remains an adored figure among Napoli supporters, reports from The Sun suggest the player has found the city’s passionate atmosphere difficult to manage away from the stadium. A source quoted by the newspaper claimed that the constant public attention has become overwhelming.

“Scott loves elements of Italian life and had a wonderful first season. But the passion of the fans can be a blessing but also make things difficult,” said the source. “He is treated as a god over there but it means he finds it difficult to do simple things when he’s not training. The attention can be suffocating.”

Those close to the player insist his commitment to Napoli remains strong, but the same reports claim he would consider a “sensational return” to the Premier League if the right opportunity arose.

After winning both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his time with Manchester United, McTominay’s reputation has grown substantially since moving abroad. His development under Conte has turned him into one of the most complete midfielders in Serie A, combining his trademark energy with increased composure in front of goal.

Whether his next challenge comes in England or he remains a cornerstone of Napoli’s midfield, McTominay’s story has already become one of the most remarkable success tales in recent British football history — and his next decision will be closely watched by clubs across the Premier League.
