From Portman Road to Parkhead? Kieran McKenna Linked with Celtic Job

Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna has emerged as a contender to replace Brendan Rodgers at Celtic following the manager’s sudden resignation.

The 39-year-old has become one of the most talked-about young coaches in British football, and his name is now on the shortlist as the Parkhead board begin their search for a long-term successor.

Interim boss Martin O’Neill has stepped in alongside Shaun Maloney, while several high-profile names are being considered behind the scenes.

McKenna’s rise and Celtic’s attraction

Few managers have risen as quickly as McKenna. After spells with the academies at Tottenham and Manchester United, he took charge of Ipswich Town in 2021 and led them to consecutive promotions from League One and the Championship. His side’s relegation from the Premier League last season did little to damage his reputation, and he was reportedly approached by Chelsea and Brighton before signing a new deal until 2028.

At Celtic, his progressive coaching style could prove appealing. His teams favour quick circulation, structure, and high pressing, which aligns with the club’s expectation to dominate games domestically.

He also carries experience working within elite environments, having served as assistant to Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Old Trafford. That pedigree, combined with his tactical clarity and communication skills, makes him a strong candidate for a club seeking stability and identity after a turbulent few weeks.

Other candidates and the road ahead

Celtic owner Dermot Desmond and the board are believed to be weighing several options. Former boss Ange Postecoglou has been made the bookmakers’ favourite for a dramatic return, while Wilfried Nancy of Columbus Crew and Kjetil Knutsen of Bodø/Glimt are both admired for their recent success abroad. There is also speculation around Stephen Robinson at St Mirren.

For McKenna, leaving Portman Road would not be straightforward. He remains under contract, and Ipswich are determined to keep him as they rebuild in the Championship. However, the lure of Champions League football and the chance to manage one of Europe’s most historic clubs could yet prove persuasive.

With O’Neill and Maloney providing short-term cover, attention will now turn to whether Celtic opt for experience or evolution. Either way, McKenna is firmly among the names shaping the early conversation about the next chapter at Parkhead.
