Frattesi Strikes Late as Inter Milan Edge Bayern Munich

Inter Milan grabbed a dramatic late winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie at the Allianz Arena.

Inter Seize Crucial Away Advantage

Despite a dominant start from the hosts — including Harry Kane striking the post early on — it was Inter who broke the deadlock in the 38th minute with their first shot on target. Marcus Thuram’s inventive flick set up Lautaro Martinez, who fired into the roof of the net with the outside of his boot.

Veteran forward Thomas Muller, who recently confirmed he will leave Bayern at the end of the season, equalised in the 85th minute with a close-range finish following Konrad Laimer’s low cross.

But Inter had the final word just three minutes later when substitute Davide Frattesi turned home Carlos Augusto’s cross, handing the Serie A leaders a precious away win and ending Bayern’s 22-match unbeaten home run in Europe.

‘We Still Feel Belief’ – Kompany

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany remained defiant despite the loss, telling reporters:

“At the end I saw a lot of celebrations [from Inter Milan] but from our side it’s half-time, it’s 2-1 and we’re motivated for the next game.

We still feel belief we can win there and have no reason to think any different than we can do it – and we will do everything we can.”

Bayern, who lead the Bundesliga by six points, now face a challenging trip to San Siro on Wednesday, 16 April. The aggregate winners will meet either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.

Kane and Co. Rue Missed Chances

England skipper Kane saw several efforts go begging — most notably curling against the post in the first half — while fellow countryman Eric Dier anchored Bayern’s injury-hit defence.

Michael Olise, also impressive on the night, saw one deflected shot go narrowly wide and another saved, but Bayern’s failure to convert their dominance proved costly.

Inter, runners-up in 2023, showed their pedigree once again, with captain Martinez scoring his seventh Champions League goal of the season before Frattesi’s late strike secured a vital away win.

Site Opinion

For all the talk of Bayern Munich’s home dominance, it was Inter Milan who showed the sharper edge when it mattered. Despite spells of pressure and a host of chances, the German side’s lack of clinical finishing proved costly — and Inter punished them with ruthless efficiency. The timing of Frattesi’s winner, coming just moments after Thomas Muller’s emotional equaliser, felt like a gut punch to the hosts and could prove pivotal in the tie.

From a broader perspective, this result piles further pressure on Vincent Kompany’s men, especially considering the final will be played on their own patch. With Real Madrid suffering their own woes, Europe’s elite are showing signs of vulnerability — and Inter have quietly positioned themselves as serious contenders. The composure and confidence they displayed in Munich bodes well ahead of the return leg at the San Siro. For Bayern, it’s now a test of resolve and response — and anything less than a spirited turnaround could spell a bitter end to their European dream on home soil.
