A billionaire previously mooted as a potential investor in Wrexham has shifted focus towards a full takeover of Bristol City.
The development leaves Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney looking elsewhere for the latest round of outside backing.
Fresh Investment Still Expected
Wrexham have attracted significant interest from wealthy figures since their high-profile Hollywood takeover. In 2024, the Allyn family secured a stake in the club, having earlier been linked with Liverpool. Their arrival reinforced the financial platform behind the North Wales side, who continue to target Premier League football.
Reports earlier this year suggested Saudi adviser Turki Al-Sheikh could become the next to join the ownership group, with the Red Dragons valued at £350m.
However, journalist Alan Nixon now claims Al-Sheikh is instead closing in on a deal for Bristol City, a Championship rival managed by Liam Manning. He is said to have identified property in the city as a potential base from which to operate during spells in England.
That step forward effectively ends talk of his involvement at the Racecourse Ground, though chief executive Humphrey Ker has already admitted billionaire interest in the club shows little sign of slowing.
“Then I think what happens is that Rob and Ryan go into their Rolodex and call up one of the dozens and dozens of people who’ve got in touch within the last four years and been like ‘hi I’m a multi, multi, multi billionaire, I want to join in on this with you’,” Ker said earlier this year.
Ker added that Reynolds and McElhenney intend to stay in their roles but see new investment as essential to taking Wrexham to the next level. He explained that the financial demands of climbing from the Championship into the Premier League mean outside capital is almost unavoidable.
For now, Wrexham must focus on improving results after a difficult start to the 2025/26 campaign. Their rapid rise through the divisions and global profile, boosted by their documentary series, ensures they remain one of the most appealing clubs for potential investors.
Site Opinion
While Al-Sheikh’s attention appears to have shifted firmly towards Bristol City, the bigger picture for Wrexham is more reassuring. Their owners’ visibility and the club’s soaring profile continue to attract billionaire interest from across the globe.
Losing one potential backer is unlikely to halt the flow of offers, and with Championship consolidation the short-term goal, Reynolds and McElhenney can be selective about who they choose to work with. The long-term challenge will be securing the right partner to fuel their push towards the Premier League, rather than simply any partner willing to buy in.
